What happens during your reiki treatment

A reiki treatment takes places in a relaxing environment where you can allow yourself permission to relax. At the beginning of a session I will explain what reiki is, clarify why you are looking for reiki and if you are suffering from any specific aliments. Then you get the opportunity to switch off from the real world for about 1 to 1 1/4 hours and experience the benefits of reiki for yourself.

During the reiki treatment your remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. I will cover you in a light blanket so you are comfortable and relaxed. I will place my hands over specific parts of your body, usually starting from the head and working towards the feet. I will respect your privacy and personal space during this process. As I use the hand positions you may become aware of sensations (heat, cold, tingling, shivers etc) throughout your body. You may also feel nothing. This is totally normal, as this is the reiki energy is being absorbed by your body is going to whatever part of your body needs it the most.

Reiki usually sends people into a state of deep relaxation so you may even fall asleep. As each individual is unique, I find that each reiki treatment is also unique as reiki works on many levels, going to where it needs to go. The reiki energy is cumulative in that it builds up each time you have a treatment, which is why it is recommended to have 4-6 sessions to kick start your self healing ability.

After the treatment you may feel energized while others feel peaceful and tranquil. Most people notice a difference after the first reiki treatment, and the benefits of reiki grow with repeated sessions.


How many treatments should I have?

I get asked this question a lot. The answer is, “It depends.” It depends on a number of things.

People receive reiki for many different reasons. Receiving regular Reiki treatments is excellent self-care and helps you to maintian holistic balance. If you choose Reiki as a method of pampering or a boost then a Reiki treatment once in a while is sufficient. If you have a chronic condition and wish to have Reiki treatments with the aim of improving your health challenge, ongoing weekly treatments are usually encouraged for a period of six to eight weeks.

For conditions like stress, tension, anxiety, sleeplessness and emotional problems I’d suggest 4 treatments over a period of 8 weeks; physical stuff can take a little longer. If you are looking for longer term support as your navigate challenge and integrate changes into your life, I’d suggest bi-weekly or monthly treatments.

The reiki energy is cumulative and builds up in the system. While the benefits of reiki may be noticed after one treatment, ongoing Reiki treatments are desirable for long term results. Just like anything the more you do it, the better the results e.g. one yoga class is wonderful, yoga regularly is where you will truly feel and see the benefits.

My general recommendation is to receive three to five Reiki treatments one to two weeks apart. Once you see yourself improving you can space out treatments to one month or six weeks apart. 

You know your body best and are the best spokesperson for you.

What is Reiki?

Although energy work and reiki is considered quiet popular many people still don’t know what it is…

The best way to understand it, is to have your own personal experience of it.

It’s like describing the sun to someone who has only ever lived in a cave. Words just won’t do it but take them out to the sunshine and there you have it – they feel that warmth and glow for themselves!

I could talk about reiki all day but it’s through having your own experience of it, that you will come to know it and yourself.

In very simple terms, reiki supports your body to come into harmony and balance with itself. Balance means different things at different times. If you are tired, you’ll feel re-energised. If you are anxious, you’ll feel peaceful. If you feel stressed, you’ll feel calmer. If you feel out of sorts, you’ll feel more like yourself. If you feel overwhelmed, you’ll discover a sense of peace within. If you feel ungrounded, you’ll feel centered.

Reiki can offer you so much more when you are open to it. It can deepen your connection to your innate healing power, increase your vitality, support your nervous system and advance your spiritual growth.

The ability to heal is a natural as the ability to breathe, and through reiki, a practitioner essentially guides the person to bring healing and balance back into their awareness.

Reiki Principles

The aim of the reiki principles is to bring reiki awareness into everyday life. They are guidelines for Reiki Practitioners to use in their spiritual development.

I feel we could all benefit from reminding ourselves of the five principles.  The ‘Just for Today’ means being mindful, being in the moment, being aware of what is going on around you.  By being in the moment (this moment right now) you are invited to live in the present, which is the only time over which you have any control.

The past is gone and the future is just a thought away.  By living in the present you open yourself up to appreciating and truly experiencing whatever you are doing in that moment.

They are seen as the foundation of the system of reiki. They are deceptively simple yet can be hard to live on a day-to-day basis. Through reiki we move closer to experiencing more and more of these qualities in ourselves and in our life.
